Question — answered
How does a UAE business get recommended by ChatGPT or Gemini?
When a customer asks an assistant for 'a good dermatologist in Dubai Marina', the model assembles an answer from sources it can read and verify. Businesses appear or vanish based on engineering, not fame — and most Gulf SMEs have simply never built the layer that makes them quotable.
Quick answer
AI assistants recommend businesses they can verify across consistent public sources. To appear: publish correct structured data (what you do, where, how to book), keep your facts identical across your site, Google profile and directories, write pages that answer real customer questions with extractable statements, and keep your site crawlable for AI bots. In our October 2026 Gulf scans, most SME websites had no structured data at all — the bar is low and open.
The checklist, in order of leverage
- 01
Structured data
Schema.org markup describing the business, services, location, hours and FAQs — the machine-readable layer assistants parse before prose.
- 02
Fact consistency
Name, address, services, hours identical everywhere. Contradictions between your site and your Maps profile read as unreliability, and unreliable sources don't get cited.
- 03
Citable answer pages
One page per real question your customers ask, answer first, with a number and a date where possible. Assistants lift clean statements; marketing fog gives them nothing to quote.
- 04
Crawlability
AI crawlers must be allowed and the content server-rendered. A site that only exists after JavaScript executes is invisible to part of the pipeline.
What doesn't work
You cannot buy placement in organic assistant answers, keyword-stuffing reads worse to models than to humans, and fake review volume is a trust signal in the wrong direction. The uncomfortable truth is that assistants reward the same thing customers do: verifiable, specific, current information — compounded over months, not gamed over a weekend.
This is the practice we run on our own domain daily — structured pages, monitored AI-crawler traffic, public methodology — and the same layer we build for client businesses. Arabic deserves special mention: assistants answering Arabic questions need Arabic sources, and in most UAE SME categories those barely exist yet.
Frequently asked questions
The technical layer lands in weeks; being picked up as a cited source typically builds over one to three months depending on category competition and how often assistants are asked about it. We benchmark prompts before starting so progress is measured, not felt.
It overlaps: the technical base (speed, structure, markup) serves both. The difference is the target — being quoted inside a generated answer rather than ranked as a blue link — which rewards extractable statements and verifiable facts even more heavily.
Markup makes you readable; it doesn't make you worth citing. The pages still need real answers — prices, processes, availability — stated plainly. Markup without substance is an empty, well-labelled box.
Yes — assistants lean on maps and directory data for local recommendations, and profile-site consistency is part of being verifiable. It is one of the first things our audit checks.
