Question — answered
How fast is a normal Gulf business website in 2026? We measured 2,726 of them
Speed advice usually quotes global averages. We scanned every reachable clinic and real-estate website we collected in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh and Jeddah — public listings plus, for UAE clinics, the official licence registries: 2,726 sites measured in October 2026 — with the same Lighthouse mobile test Google uses. These are the Gulf's actual numbers, and the bar for beating them is lower than you think.
Quick answer
Across 2,726 Gulf SME websites scanned in October 2026, the median Lighthouse mobile performance score is 55–61% depending on sector — far below the 90% Google considers good. A quarter of sites score under 40–49%, depending on sector. Server first response, measured from the UAE, runs 0.6–1.0 seconds at the median but averages 1.1–1.9 seconds, because a heavy tail of very slow sites drags every sector down. Beating 90% puts a Gulf SME site well inside the top quarter of its market — three quarters of every sector scores below 73%.
The 2026 benchmarks, by sector and city
Lighthouse mobile performance, measured once per site with identical settings in October 2026. 'p25' means a quarter of the sector scores below that number.

How to read your own score against these numbers
Run PageSpeed Insights on your homepage, mobile tab — that is the same test. Above 90%: you are well inside the top quarter of your Gulf market and speed is not your bottleneck. Between 55% and 90%: you are normal, which here means slow — Google's own threshold for 'good' starts at 90%, and the sector medians sit thirty points below it. Under your sector's bottom quarter (40–49%): a quarter of your market shares your problem, and it is costing measurable conversions on every paid click you buy.
The gap between median and average response times tells the second story: averages run roughly twice the medians because a long tail of sites takes three, five, ten seconds to send a first byte. Those sites pay for ads like everyone else — the clicks just bounce before the page exists.
What actually moves the number, in order
From the recurring patterns in the 2,726 scans — heaviest levers first.
- 01
Images
Uncompressed photography is the single most common drag in these sectors — clinics with full-resolution interior shots, agencies with raw property photos. Modern formats and sizing routinely recover 20+ points.
- 02
Theme and plugin weight
WordPress powers the majority of both sectors, usually under a page-builder theme loading scripts on every page. The top-20 sites in our reports include WordPress builds — trimmed ones.
- 03
Server and caching
Median first response of 0.6–1.0 s from inside the region points at cheap shared hosting and absent caching, not geography. A CDN plus real caching moves response under 0.3 s without a rebuild.
- 04
Third-party scripts
Chat widgets, sliders, trackers added over years. Each is small; eight of them are not. Audit what still earns its place — and keep the measurement stack (one pixel, one GA4) lean and server-assisted.
Frequently asked questions
It beats the Dubai clinic median (60%) but sits in Google's 'needs improvement' band — the 90% bar is what the measurement itself calls good. In our October 2026 scans, the clinics leading the named top-20s reach the 70–90%+ range, so 70% is competitive locally and still leaves the gap open.
Industry benchmarks commonly cite roughly 7% conversion loss per second of added load time — a rule of thumb, not a law. What we measured directly: the slow half of these sectors runs paid traffic onto pages that take seconds to respond, which is paying full price for half the click's value. Our slow-site cost calculator makes the assumption adjustable.
Gulf SME traffic is overwhelmingly mobile, Google indexes mobile-first, and the mobile test is the stricter one — a site that passes on mobile passes everywhere.
Lighthouse varies a few points between runs by design; trends and bands matter, not single digits. We scanned each site once with identical settings, so sector medians and quartiles are comparable even though any individual score carries that noise.
